The Chicago South Shore and South Bend Railroad first began as a three-mile-long trolley line in East Chicago, Indiana in 1901. It wasn't until 1908 that it expanded to connect South Bend, Indiana, with Chicago, Illinois. Originally a valuable asset in the Sam Insull utilities empire, it is now the only operational electric interurban in the United States. The railroad offers a unique perspective of the Calumet region, taking passengers from a bustling city to rolling agricultural acres, and from steel mills to a national lakeshore. This is showcased in around 200 vintage photographs that depict the various aspects of the region that South Shore passengers have been able to enjoy over the years.
These images capture a range of scenes including rolling stock, passenger depots, excursion destinations, and historic sites along the 90-mile corridor, presenting a century-long story of the railroad. The journey offers a glimpse into the history and development of the region, illustrating the railroad's significant role in connecting the communities it serves.
