Native Americans frequented the land now known as St. Joseph County long before recorded history. Among them were the Potawatomie and Miami, who used a well-trodden path that connected the St. Joseph River (and Lake Michigan) to the Kankakee River and eventually the Mississippi River through a two-mile portage. In 1820, Pierre F. Navarre constructed a log cabin near the St. Joseph River, laying the foundation for the eventual development of South Bend and Mishawaka in St. Joseph County. This book contains over 200 vintage images from St. Joseph County, Mishawaka, and South Bend, showcasing the commerce, industry, and businesses that flourished in the area, including Studebaker, Ball Band, Singer, and Bendix. Education was of utmost importance to the early settlers, leading to the establishment of one-room schoolhouses and Notre Dame University. The photographs capture the public spaces, buildings, and workers - some long gone, while others still stand today. Additionally, the book features images of the people, the homes they built, and the activities they enjoyed in their northern Indiana community.
